Chapter Chasers
Flipping pages and chasing amazing stories! (Ages 11-17)
Service Description
This is a hybrid class that is an awesome mix of book club combined with a dash of language arts and and art class all blended together. This is an engaging English enrichment class for middle and high school students! We will explore a variety of literary genres and students will strengthen their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and critical-thinking skills. Taught by Jessica Fulton, a Florida certified English educator for grades 6–12, Chasing Chapters makes learning language arts meaningful, imaginative, and fun! For October & November we will be reading and analyzing the Newbery Medal-winning novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. This book serves as an excellent tool for developing critical thinking, analyzing dystopian themes, and discussing the importance of individuality and choice. While The Giver is highly acclaimed and widely taught, it does introduce several sensitive themes that your child may not be ready to discuss. As we read, students will encounter discussions and depictions of: • A highly controlled society (utopian versus dystopian concepts) • Suppression of emotions and memories • The concept of "Release" (which is later revealed to involve euthanasia and infanticide) • Adolescent physical changes (referred to in the book discreetly as "Stirrings") These topics are handled with the utmost care and sensitivity. Our classroom discussions will focus strictly on the literary merit of the book, such as author intent, societal structures, ethics, and character development. We will use these elements to encourage critical thinking. If you have questions whether this book is the right fit for your child at this time, please contact me before registering. I would be happy to discuss it with you. Monthly Tuition is $80 and includes a copy of the novel and four (4) class meetings.
